Newcastle Institute presents:

Newcastle Offshore Wind: Facts and Fiction

The Federal Government has declared an area in the Pacific Ocean off the Hunter, as suitable for offshore wind development. The area covers 1800 square kilometres between Swansea and Port Stephens. The declaration followed consultation with a range of stakeholders and will contribute to Australia's energy transition towards renewable power and cleaner, cheaper, and more secure energy as part the government's Rewiring the Nation plan.

Feasibility Licence applications will open for proposed projects within the declared area from August to November 2023.

With multiple coal-fired power stations in the Hunter, including Liddell, Eraring and Bayswater, scheduled to shut down in future years, alternative sources of clean energy and energy security is a priority. Several industry organisations are currently undertaking scoping and feasibility studies related to the NOW proposal.
Newcastle Institute October forum will focus on discussing the facts about the proposed project. With a long period of consultation as part of the feasibility stages of the project, distinguishing facts from fiction is an important part of understanding the benefits and challenges. Our panel includes:

Michael Jessop leads the Port of Newcastle’s Clean Energy Precinct and its offshore and onshore wind facilitation strategy
Steve McCall Director, EPS Energy is a renewable energy consultant with expertise in large scale energy projects

Our expert panel will discuss the proposed project and will differentiate fact from fiction. They will discuss the benefits and challenges of the project as well as the processes which will be undertaken before the proposal is finalised.

When: 11th October 6.00pm- 7.30 pm

Where: South Leagues Club Llewellyn St Merewether
