Newcastle Institute presents:
Making the sexual assault criminal justice system fit for 21st century
The criminal justice system for sexual assault has long been considered outdated. While there were changes to NSW laws to provide greater clarity regarding consent these changes alone will not make the entire system just. There are still concerns that the system is not fit for the 21st century requiring a broader view of the experience of victims across all stages of the system.
A panel of experts will discuss what is needed in the sexual assault criminal justice system fit for 21stcentury. This will be considered across all stages of the system from the alleged crime to the first encounter with police, to court experiences and outcomes.
The panel will include:
Professor Catharine Lumby, Professor of Media at the University of Sydney
Kerrie Thompson , Chief Executive Officer, Victim Support Unit VOCAL Hunter
Simon Harben, SC, Hunter Street Chambers, Newcastle
Professor Anne Cossins, Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales.
The panel will examine alternatives to the adversarial system applied in hearing allegations of sexual assault. Professor Lumby will discuss lessons from her work as adviser to the National Rugby League. Perspectives of victims in considering changes to the system will be emphasised.
